LEDs and Melanoma

logo.jpgThis seems like an interesting project using one of our favorite things: LEDs!  This page shows how to use LEDs to detect Melanoma.  There are pictures and explanations on how to do it (although the English isn’t great). (via)

ring9a.jpgWhen I was in high school, one of the coolest things to wear was a ring made from a dollar bill.  It looks just as cool now!Learn how to make one with these illustrated instructions.

The Zelda Drive

zeldadrive.jpgI don’t know why you would want to go and ruin a perfectly good classic Zelda game for Nintendo - but if you do, here’s some instructions on a cartridge to hard drive modification.  Looks pretty slick, but I’m waiting for a smaller ATARI 2600 cartridge hard drive mod so I can finally do something with all these copies of ET. The Night Writer

nightwriter.jpgNo, we’re not talking about a television show from the 80’s, we’re talking about a way to write messages onto any metal surface using the led throwies concept. We’ve seen this done in a graffiti research labs video recently, but now they’re sharing more details on how they did it in yet another hip graffiti research video. I don’t care who you are - this is rad. (via)

Easy Button Hack

easy.jpgOn a recent trip to Staples Sam and I saw the display for the ‘easy button’ and couldn’t really understand the point of buying one. It does nothing useful. We hadn’t, however, thought of turning it into a giant garage door opener button. Here are some instruction on how to do just that. (via)

Pulsejet

pulsejet.jpgHere are some basic instructions on how to make a pulsejet.  The instruction aren’t too detailed but there are diagrams that show how everything should come together.  This is a little more complex than the jam jar jet featured in the current issue of MAKE. This one looks like you might actually be able to get it to fly.

Survival

fiddleheads1.jpgSo maybe skinning squirrels isn’t your thing and as one of our writers Josh pointed out, plants are good to eat too.  But what if you’re miles from the local grocery store or farmers market?  Learn which plants you can eat out in the wild.  This information isn’t only good for some apocalyptical situation but will seriously lighten your load if you go on long backpacking trips.

How to Skin a Squirrel

skin.jpgJust in case the power ever goes out for good and everything goes back about a hundred years, you might need to know how to skin an animal.  This tutorial shows, in detail, how to skin a squirrel.  If you’re offended by dead animals being ripped apart, don’t read this tutorial or attempt to live in the post-apocalyptic world.

Paper Enigma Machine

enigma1.jpgHave you ever wanted your own enigma machine? This printable paper enigma machine will have you sending and receiving secret messages in no time.

“This machine is compatible with the original 3-rotor German Enigma used during World War II. For simplicity it omits the “ring settings” and plug board, but the primary workings of the machine are captured in this model. Great as an educational tool, or just for fun!” [via]

Creative Lighting

chandelier_off.jpgDon’t have enough light in your workspace? Make a fractal chandelier. The construction on this project is simple enough. Just don’t get too carried away with it, before you know it you could end up with a fairly large power bill. (via)

Peeps under fire!

peep.jpgEveryone’s favorite nasty Easter candy, marshmallow peeps, are very popular on the internet. This is one of the best sites on peep experiments. Read it and then try your own experiments! I love to stick them in the microwave!

Fun With Pop Cans

can_art36.jpgYes I said pop and not soda, that’s how the cool kids say it where I’m from. Anyway, here are some pictures of things to do with your pop/soda cans that are a little beyond the normal bi-plane that we’ve all seen. There aren’t any instructions but I’m sure from the pictures you could figure some of them out or come up with some new variaitions. (via)

Where To Get Stuff

None of these companies paid us anything to plug them (unfortunately), but they are the best places to get things.

McMaster:  This site looks like a SPAM link farm, and the software looking box on the main page doesn’t help.  But they actually have a ton of products to fill your every hardware DIY need.

MSC Industrial:  Like McMaster except they have sane amounts of products.  Hardware stuff - nuts, bolts, wrenches, and the like.

Harbor Freight and Tool:  Our favorite!  We don’t know what third world country they’re exploiting to sell us air compressors for five bucks, but come on - air compressors for five bucks!

Mouser: Your one stop shop for all your electronic component needs.  You won’t find wrenches here, but you will find a lot of little electronicy looking things.

Digi-key: Another good site for electronics components.  They have a lot of stuff and a website almost as ugly as McMaster’s.
(Note: Harbor Freight and Tool does not actually sell air compressors for $5, so stop looking.)
