The dream machine was invented in the 60’s and is the first known art piece designed to be viewed with your eyes closed. Set on a 78 RPM turntable, the flashes of light are supposed to correspond to you brain waves or something crazy like that - I just think it looks cool. Download the plans and make your own. If you still have a turntable lying around, let us know if watching it spin with your eyes closed is “totally far out!”

Great guide, but people might think you’re a horrible photographer anyway if you have a diffuser made from a page out of their guest book.

Okay, you’ve got tons of camera gear or other gadgets - now how do you carry them around and keep them safe while doing it? There are some expensive cases out there that solve these issues, but making your own is not only less expensive but allows you to customize the case for exactly the gadgets you want to fit in there. Here’s another way to customize just about anything. Using stickers as stencils is easier than making stencils, and works just as well. This works by painting an entire object with stickers on it, then removing the stickers to reveal the paint that was originally there.

Apparently Thomas Edison wasted his time with all those thousands of light bulbs he made before getting one that worked. He could have just plugged a pickle into the wall (or you know, whatever they had for electricity back then)! Although it doesn’t last as long (10 seconds maybe), and it looks like it gives off a lot of smoke, it sure would be convenient if I could just plug a pickle into my light socket instead of a light bulb. Before you get too excited, this garden is for growing herbs, not herb. This hydroponic garden is made from a 14 gallon rubbermaid tub and is great for smaller living styles such as apartments and the like. The other materials are fairly inexpensive, so this garden won’t set you back - and you’ll have fresh herbs for your culinary masterpieces!

The pictures of shopping cart chairs have been floating around the net for a while, but I hadn’t seen any sites showing the technique used to make them. MAKE has posted some photos of the process now, so we can see exactly how the metal cart is bent into shape. Don’t run out and steal a shopping cart for this project, please. Buy one … legitimately … from the shopping cart store.
Incidentally, if there were a shopping cart store, and you were buying several shopping carts, what would you put them in while you were browsing?

Here are instructions on making a “true” theremin that claims to put modern day equivalents to shame. The sound samples are incredible, especially this one of over the rainbow and this one mimicking a cello. This does look like a fairly complex undertaking, so make sure your circuit knowledge is up to snuff before attempting.

There’s something stylish and utilitarian about this soda can essence burner. Using a can of Acuarius (uh, never heard of it) or other soda can, you can create a cool burner for your “essence” (liquid version of incense) to be used to spice up your abode or for a little aroma therapy (at least that’s my guess).
