Shower Curtain to Banana Holder

banana.jpg
Make featured this brilliant idea from Sarah and Daniel Drucker, who used a shower curtain to hold bananas in their kitchen.

I’d make one, except I find bananas to be the most horrifying, squishy, evil fruits that ever existed.

Most Useless, Yet Hysterical, Use for an Apple

apple.jpg

A … vibrating, USB-powered apple … yes. It’s just one of those things you’d never think anyone would want to create, and yet, someone has. The idea’s totally silly, but I was completely sold after I read randofo’s explanation on Instructables: To keep with spirit of the season I made this USB-Powered Apple. It is really quite a simple device. It vibrates when a person grabs for it and does not vibrate when a person does not. Unlike your family, this apple is predictable and may relieve stress. [via]

Christmas Cards into Little Houses

cardvillage.jpg

It’s getting to be that time of year, where the super-organized among us start to decorate for the holidays. (I’m not one of them).

But if you are, Danny Seo of Simply Green has a great idea to recycle old holiday cards: Make them into silly little Christmas villages. Instead of the ceramic ones your grandma used, a few snips will create updated, eco-friendly houses.

Turn one of those silly can cozies you can get at a gas station or free as a promotion into a useful camera case that is both padded and will help protect it from the elements.

Book iPod Cozy

ipodcozy.jpg

In a variation of a previous post where we showed you how to mod a book to hide secret stuff, we present another use: the book iPod cozy. What a great idea, especially for you high school kids who aren’t allowed to have iPods at school. To the average teacher’s eye, it’s just a piece of fine literature! Bonus points if you use an old textbook.

Crayons: Not Just for Drawing

crayon-1.jpg

crayonart.jpg

Here are two great uses for crayons that go beyond the kindergarten obvious. First, Make posted this portrait made with whole crayons by Joseph Barbaccia. Squint and it looks even cooler.

And NOTCOT posted these crayon carvings by Diem Chau that are equally amazing.

Frozen Pesto from the Chick in the Kitchen

We love getting tips from readers here at DIY:happy. But I must say that none of our tips showed me the light as much as this one, from a lovely reader apparently named HNNNNNNNNNNN, who reminded me that, as a woman, I should "get back in the kitchen and make some sammiches."

Well, HNNNNNNNNNNN, that’s just where I went. And what I found was great. There’s a stove, a refrigerator, some food and a whole lotta femininity just oozing out of there. And there’s this great idea to freeze pesto so when you need it, you can simply grab it from the freezer and add it to your recipes.

Book Frame

These book frames are a great use for old books you don’t use. It’s a fun opportunity for ironic juxtaposition; put a picture of a burly man in a monster truck in a cookbook frame, for example.

Make Your Own iPod Nano

I think stegasaurus described this baby the best: holds as many songs as you can remember the words to.

And the battery life is terrific; you’ll never have to recharge it.

$2 Laptop Stand

Suh-weet at Flickr had a brilliant idea to use a CD stand from IKEA to make a cheap laptop stand. It does double duty: holds the laptop at a nice angle if you want to use a different keyboard and helps to keep it cool. Apparently, these specific CD stands are out of stock, but I’ve seen ones like it sold at a bunch of other places.

Paint for Pyros

Apply a paint made of gunpowder, dextrin and rubbing alcohol to a piece of wood, set it on fire and watch your design burn! After the fire goes out, it leaves a sooty image burned into the wood. Just, you know, don’t blow yourself up. Check out the detailed instructions here.

Paper Wallet

Make a wallet from one sheet of 8 1/2 by 11″ paper … cardstock or one side of a manila folder would work best and be the most durable. It’s a billion times thinner than regular wallets, and when you get bored with it, just fold another one in a different color!

Pinball Machine Coffee Table

Come on, admit it. Between your six video-game consoles, pool table and loud music, your place still isn’t enough like an arcade. Until now. Make this pinball machine coffee table and all you’ll need is a prize booth.
