These atlas gloves are easy to make and will allow you to control the google earth application with hand gestures. Basically the gloves each have a small light - you make hand gestures where your webcam can pick them up and it interprets them as commands. This is a fun and easy way to gain Minority Report style control over your computer and explore the earth while you're at it.

After you use Google Earth for a while go in and turn on the various alternate special functions. I particularly like the photos that people have posted that show up as little click-able icons on the screen. After writing up this blog I feel a lot better about the new Google Earth release except for the inability to return to an exact location on the pole bar zooms. Also, they need to make the lower circle appear different from the upper one, a different color or perhaps a diamond shape would do nicely.

Atlas Gloves is a DIY physical interface for controlling 3D mapping applications like Google Earth. The user interface is a pair of illuminating gloves that can be used to track intuitive hand gestures like grabbing, pulling, reaching and rotating. The Open Source Atlas Gloves application can be downloaded here and operated from home using a web cam and two self-made illuminating gloves. The video tracking functionality is written within the Processing programming framework, in conjunction with JAVA library. This robot library converts a special video tracking vocabulary into mouse clicks/releases and cursor movement in order to control the computer.
