Sorry folks, nothing new from DIY:happy today. We will return on Monday, bringing you the latest projects to wow and amaze yourself and your friends.
Your friendly neighborhood DIY:happy editors have entered a contest over at Gizmodo. We created a music video entitled “One Trillion Gizmos” which, we trust, you will find pretty entertaining. Go check it out, as well as the other finalists. If you like our video, give us a vote!
The next best thing to making something yourself is getting it for free. This is just a reminder for everyone that this Saturday is free comic book day.
I was sure to go pick up a load of comics last year and it was a blast!
Find stores near you that are participating.

It’s been a bit of a crazy week, but there’s more awesome projects then ever. Why not sit down this weekend and try one of these projects:
Retro Handset to Cellphone Modification
Retro Handset to Bluetooth Modification
Design and make your own PCBs for your projects
Mobile Infrared Transmitter (Traffic Light Controller)
Thanks to everyone who stopped by at the Maker Faire and for all the great ideas. We had a ton of fun there but it’s good to be home. Eating In-N-Out twice a day and sleeping in a car takes it’s toll! I’ve been mulling over some of your ideas on our long ride home. As promised the projects we showed at the Faire will be posted this week.
Feel free to send your suggestions on these or any other projects, we’ll post them as we do them.

Sorry folks, one more day with no updates. We are driving home from the Maker Faire today and won’t be getting home until sometime tonight. You can watch our progress home via GPS waypoint using JakeJack, or you can just tune in tomorrow when we will be updating as normal.

Okay, I know we promised you updates yesterday and today, but it has been crazy busy here at the Maker Faire in San Mateo, CA. Plus, the Internet has been crazy. Instead of regular updates on here, check out the DIYHAPPY Flickr Photo Pool to see some snapshots of awesome projects we have seen around the fair so far. Check it out!
Everyone please text maker115 to MOZES (66937) - it’s a cool new service that allows you to receive information about the booths here at the fair. It will send you a text back with more information. Try it out, and then go the mozes.com to make your own text codes and messages.
About 30 miles out of Elko Nevada, our power inverter started whining (literally) and wouldn’t power my notebook. I thought it was just going crazy, but then eventually I looked at it and noticed the “Low Battery” light had come on. We check the dash and sho’ nuff - we were having an electrical problem.
We made it to Elko, stopped at CarQuest and checked our battery, which was fine. Turns out our alternator went out. We bought a new one, replaced it and are now on our way.
Since this is a DIY site, here’s a guide on changing your alternator.
In case your wondering why you can’t track us - nextel doesn’t have any towers through much of Nevada, apparently. You’ll be able to pick us back up in a few hours.
As you may have read, we are currently driving to the Make Faire. We’re passing the Bonnevile Speedway now about 170 miles into our trip. I wanted to let everyone know that we have set up an access point in our car. So if you happen to be driving down I-80 towards San Fransisco today, we’d be happy to share our roving Internet Connection with you. If you need to know where we are, well, you can track our driving progress and find out exactly where we are with Jakejack.
Posts will be sparse today and tomorrow, but we will be posting coverage of the Maker Faire Saturday and Sunday.
For those of you who read through an RSS feed, please note that we have updated our feed address. The old address will stop working within a few days. The new single address feed will work with RSS 9.2/1.0/2.0 and Atom. It is better.

Jake just called me with a hot tip for today. Until 2pm IHOPs across the nation are giving out free pancakes! Nothing to do with DIY, but breakfast is a great time for planning out your next big project. Check out the details here, and head down to your local IHOP for some free flapjacks.

There was a nasty bit of code that was causing some major slowdowns on the site recently (and creaking noises). We’ve removed the offending code for now until the bug is resolved. The page should be loading quickly. If not, please upgrade from AOL.
The fasten seatbelt lights have been turned off and you are now free to move about the cabin.
UPDATE: Thank you for your patience while we switched servers. Our new server is super quick and will bring you all the best of the DIY scene at breakneck speeds. Normal posts will resume in the morning!
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Please notice the fasten your seatbelt light has just turned on and at this time we would ask you to return to your seats and buckle up.
We are switching hosts, and so things will be a bit rocky for the next little while. We are not anticipating a complete disruption of service, things are just going to get slow.
The good news is that when all is said and done we should be lightening fast!
Thank you for your cooperation.
