Super Smart iTunes Playlists

Picture 3-36

Smart playlists are one of those often overlooked and underutilized features of iTunes. Dean Cheesman has an article outlining how to put your smart playlists on steroids and beef up your music management system. He gives a bunch of screenshots (like the one above) of example playlists and explains the logic behind them. You can tell he’s spent a lot of time thinking about some of these.

Geiger Counter

 Geiger Gck02L

Got granite counter tops? See if you’re slowly radiating yourself by building a Geiger counter. This little guy is capable of detecting alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. Pretty cool, but even the kit (or buying the parts separately) is pretty expensive. The cheaper way to tell is to sit on your counter for a while and then see if you can still reproduce. If anyone knows any other cheap or DIY solutions for radiation detection, sound off in the comments!

Hydrogen Fuel Cells

Alright guys, gas is getting expensive. The car companies are taking way too long to come out with Hydrogen powered cars, so I say we convert our cars ourselves. Simple remove your engine and fill your engine bay with these wine glass contraptions and you should be good to go.

Tooth Tunes Musical Toothbrush Dissection

 Gallery D 70820-4 Img 9702

Have you ever used a tooth tunes toothbrush? Probably not, because they’re for children - but these things are pretty neat-o. They play music inside your head using bone conduction while you brush. The idea is that kids will listen to the entire song before they stop, thus brushing their teeth for long enough.

Problem is, it only comes with one song. If you want to hook up your iPod to the thing it’s going to require a little hacking. This guide show you how to take apart the tooth tunes toothbrush, and the rest is up to you. Happy hacking!

Papercraft Lock and Key

 Images Anicylinder

Wow - here’s a fun one. This working papercraft lock and key can be printed right off your printer and assembled with a bit of glue and patience. We normally wouldn’t post this because it does cost a few dollars for the download, but this one is so cool we just couldn’t pass it up. Now see if you can pick it without the key! [via]

We’ve featured silk screening tutorials on here before, but can you ever have too many? This tutorial actually shows how to silk screen the “right way” for a change (as opposed to using glue, solvents, etc. like we’ve shown in the past). It can be used to make some pretty killer designs like you see in the picture.

Follow these instructions and you’ll be up and running in no time. The hardest part is and will remain coming up with an awesome design.

VHS USB Hub

 Wp-Content 2 Video Tape Usb Hub 2-1

Back in the olden days, people used to store motion pictures on some sort of primitive magnetic storage device that the Neanderthals called a “VHS” tape. If you’re lucky enough to find one of these box-DVDs, perhaps in an antique shop or at your local archeological dig, you can turn it into a clever USB Hub and relive the glory days of rewinding and non-digital picture. Let’s just hope you don’t have to adjust the tracking on your USB connection.

Repurpose Your Old TV

Files Imagecache Article Image Large Files Articles Oldtv

As the analog airways of yore go dark next February, you’ll probably be left with a boob tube or two that will only be able to serve as paperweights or landfill fodder (or, in the case of rednecks, a stand for your new TV - for shame!). But Popular Science has shown us the light with a handy-dandy tutorial on repurposing your old junker-ware picture box into a new screen for your iPod or CCTV, among other things. The added bonus is that all the hipsters will think you’re cool when you’re pumping Andrew W.K. videos straight from your new iPod Touch to your 30 year old antique TV.
