Papercraft Lock and Key

 Images Anicylinder

Wow - here’s a fun one. This working papercraft lock and key can be printed right off your printer and assembled with a bit of glue and patience. We normally wouldn’t post this because it does cost a few dollars for the download, but this one is so cool we just couldn’t pass it up. Now see if you can pick it without the key! [via]

Silk Screening

 Wp-Content Uploads 2008 06 Tshirt-Screening-Light-Burning-Design

We’ve featured silk screening tutorials on here before, but can you ever have too many? This tutorial actually shows how to silk screen the “right way” for a change (as opposed to using glue, solvents, etc. like we’ve shown in the past). It can be used to make some pretty killer designs like you see in the picture.

Follow these instructions and you’ll be up and running in no time. The hardest part is and will remain coming up with an awesome design.

Yummy Papercraft Steak Dinner

Settle down vegetarians, the steak pictured above didn’t involved killing a cow or any other animal. No, we cut down a tree instead and crafted this delicious looking (uncooked?) steak from its remains. The meal comes complete with a plate and a couple carrots. Tasty! [via]

VHS USB Hub

 Wp-Content 2 Video Tape Usb Hub 2-1

Back in the olden days, people used to store motion pictures on some sort of primitive magnetic storage device that the Neanderthals called a “VHS” tape. If you’re lucky enough to find one of these box-DVDs, perhaps in an antique shop or at your local archeological dig, you can turn it into a clever USB Hub and relive the glory days of rewinding and non-digital picture. Let’s just hope you don’t have to adjust the tracking on your USB connection.

Repurpose Your Old TV

Files Imagecache Article Image Large Files Articles Oldtv

As the analog airways of yore go dark next February, you’ll probably be left with a boob tube or two that will only be able to serve as paperweights or landfill fodder (or, in the case of rednecks, a stand for your new TV - for shame!). But Popular Science has shown us the light with a handy-dandy tutorial on repurposing your old junker-ware picture box into a new screen for your iPod or CCTV, among other things. The added bonus is that all the hipsters will think you’re cool when you’re pumping Andrew W.K. videos straight from your new iPod Touch to your 30 year old antique TV.

Fancy Speakers

Just look at those spiffy speakers right up there. They look like someone paid way too much for them and is using them to blast their neighbors’ eardrums. But this wouldn’t be DIY:happy if we weren’t about to tell you how to make them yourself, on the (relatively) cheap. Remember, these are fancy - it’s not just a “put the speaker in a box” operation, it’s more like a “there’s math involved” kind of operation.

Spiderweb Repair

 Uninvitedcollaborations Images Mended-Spiderweb-8-Fish-P

We tend to spend a lot of time sprucing up our own living environments without thinking of the little guys. Spiders must be bored with the same old, same old - so why not spruce up spidey’s pad with a little flare? Nina Katchadourian has pioneered the art for us, repairing our arachnid friend’s homes - restoring their functional beauty and creating a live art piece. Of course, the spiders always reject the artwork sometime in the night. I guess they just don’t know good art when they see it.

Fix Your Busted iPhone

 Reviews Hardware Iphone-Review.Media 175 Balcony

We always cringe when we see these busted iPhone pictures floating around the net. What a shame. The good news out there for anybody struggling with broken iPhone blues is that you can actually replace the glass yourself on the cheap. In fact, making your own replacement will cost you less than a good lunch.

The replacement screen is made of plastic, so it’s not quite as cool as the original - but it still works (even the touch-capability works). Check out the instructions for fixing your iPhone screen over at ars technica.
