Collimate Your Freakin’ Lasers

 Resources Models Files Laser Shark

So you finally got some sharks with freakin’ laser beams attached to their heads but soon realized the laser could do little more than potentially blind your helpless victims. What you need is a laser collimator - a small filter that will focus the laser into a narrower beam.

Here’s a handy guide on how to make a collimator for your average laser pointer. Next up we’ll show you how to make the laser move very slowly so you can strap down your arch nemesis and watch him squirm as the laser approaches his you-know-what. Actually, you have better things to do than sit around and watch your biggest enemy die, right? I’m sure your unnecessarily complex execution device will work without your direct supervision.

Building your own speakers will not only give you a better sound, but you’ll most likely get it at a cheaper price. You can get the enclosure pre-fabricated, pick the speakers, do a little DIY magic and you’re good to go. Here’s a good article showing you how to make your own speakers, and it even goes into a little bit of the science of sound.

Prefab Speakers

Is anyone drooling? We recently got word of this project from our tip line:

“This project is a very simple set of bookshelf sized speakers.  The enclosure used is a prefabricated speaker cabinet with curved sides and a deep piano gloss finish.  The speaker uses a single fullrange driver. The finished cabinets make it easy to knock off a great looking and sounding speaker in no time.”

Sweet! Keep the tips coming, guys - and thanks!

Got a big blank wall staring you down and haunting your dreams? Spruce it up with some wall panels made from interesting fabrics! This can be a relatively inexpensive project that will fill up a very large wall. Discount fabrics can be had for a few bucks a yard, or you can spring for the fancy stuff and pay a bit more. Canvases or any other uniform square object can be used to make the panels. See what interesting combinations of colors and patterns you can come up with!

  Wfmtp0Cz3Z0 Roknus6Vyai Aaaaaaaaaeg Ykblwqc1Pck S320 101 2451

Show your support for the rebellion against the galactic empire by sporting this incredibly awesome cap modeled after our beloved hero, R2D2. This brings us back to a time when the comedy relief character was actually cool instead of incredibly annoying (ahem … jar jar … ahem).

Make hats for your loved ones and affix restraining bolts to help keep them in line. Make one for yourself and instantly gain knowledge about how to hack into imperial systems, fly X-Wings, and more!

R2D2 Beanie. [Thanks, Tom!]

DIY Meetups

If you’re interested in a group or special interest circle - any kind, of course - you can find other likeminded people in this awesome site. I just re-joined the vegetarian meetups, back in the day I belonged to metalhead meetups, and I feel as though a yoga meetup or professional/networking meetup would also benefit me. What benefits you? Check here, or create a meetup group all by yourself! Then when you attend awkward family parties and they ask what you’re doing with your life, you can say “well I organize events for this big website online!”. They will most likely be impressed. But then your computer whiz uncle will prod you about it and ruin the facade. Fun while it lasts!

Shoestring Hammock

 Wp-Content Uploads 2008 01 Dscn0408

Not in the market to shell out $30 or more for a store-bought hammock? Why not make one out of an old blanket and a couple pieces of rope? It’s cheap, it’s comfortable, and it looks a bit weird. Be sure to make it nice and strong so you don’t fall on your head.

Jelly-Jar Photo Magnets

HGTV representation

This is a cool, cheap, easy, recycled project. So, it’s the kind we love at DIY:happy (next to complicated electronic projects, right?). This is fun to do with kids, yourself, or perhaps a stranger. Best yet, set up shop on a street corner (or online) and sell jelly-jar photo magnets to tourists! DIY:happy is where dreams are made.

Vampy Fangs

Fanges

These fangs are so cool. And Bre Pettis looks really cool (read: hot) wearing them. If you have another way than gross-tasting alginate to make a mold, like biting into green roma clay and making a plaster impression, send it to us. Thanks!

Playing With Fire

Picture 7-5

We don’t recommend playing with fire but if you must, try one of these lighter fuel soaked balls. You’ll need to remember to still be very careful and that you are dealing with fire, which is hot. But with a little work, you can make a fireball that can be rolled around in your hand for short periods of time without burning all your skin off. We do not take responsibility for any hospital bills or injuries as a results of trying this experiment. In fact, we don’t recommend you try it at all.

Compact Keychain

Keys2

Most of us only like our pockets fat if they’re full of money. For everything else, the slimmer the better. Canadian Carlos has posted a spiffy how to on getting that bulge of keys under control once and for all. I could only see this really working with a small number of keys, and there’s no way to add that ugly keychain you bought at Disneyland last year, but for the minimalist pocket master, this might just be a godsend. Threadbanger Coddles Children Again

Kind of Baby Sack

So Threadbanger decided to make an adorable baby pod. Not baby iPod, baby POD. Not Revenge of the Body Snatchers pods either. A little sack in which a toddler or baby would situate him/herself. Although I’ve heard (read: I know for a fact) that drawstrings are incredibly dangerous to have around children under five. Better off using elastic. Baby buntings are too cute.

Hacking Public Computers

windows hack

Well, it’s about that time again. The winter season is chock full of opportunities for bored miscreants to do all kinds of offensive, horrible acts. Since we know that’s going to happen, we’re just going to fan the fire. Here’s a little wikihow about how to hack a public computer at a library so you can have full access to the universe (read: internet).
